Leave of Absence
*Can a parent take their child on holiday during term time?
Headteachers may only authorise leave of absence in exceptional circumstances. If a headteacher grants a leave request, it will be for the headteacher to determine the length of time that the child can be away from school. Leave is unlikely, however, to be granted for the purposes of a family holiday as a norm.
Exception circumstances are:
• Parent/child/sibling terminally ill
• Holiday has been given by charity
• Parents serving in armed forces or uniformed services & leave is dictated
• Parents forced to take holidays at certain times due to factory shut-down etc. or are limited to when they can take a holiday by their employers & this can be proved in writing.
• The holiday is for a religious festival.
This list is not exhaustive therefore a discussion must be requested with the headteacher in all other circumstances.
Leave of absence may be requested in the above circumstances by completing the ‘Pupil Leave of Absence’ Form available to download or from school office.
Absence, due to illness over 3 days must be authorised on the production of medical evidence from your doctor.
Attendance below 85% with at least 10 days lost due to unauthorised absence may be liable for a fixed penalty.
**Parents who remove their children from school in term time may be issued with a fixed penalty notice these will be for £60 per parent per child if paid within 21 days, and £120 per parent per child if paid between 22-28 days. Parents who fail to pay fixed penalty notices may be prosecuted in court.
